The Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer turned 97, and is still working. He is most famous for the enormous buildings he designed for the Brazilian capital Brasilia. His more recent architecture is even more spectacular in its form. Some critics say he designs sculptures and not architecture.
On the east side of Guanabara Bay lays the suburb of Niteroi. On one of the cliffs of the coastline stands an impressive building that looks like a flying saucer, seemingly poised for take-off on the edge of the water. Cantilevered out from a stout central stalk, the saucer-like volume of the building has an unmistakable iconic presence, its seductive, sci-fi geometry creating a new landmark for the district. The huge saucer houses the city’s new Museum of Contemporary Art.
